Terra Kendama

Rodney Ansell

Terra Kendama, also known as moon sun ball, was once a popular Japanese household sport. The cross shaped handle represents a sword, while the ball represents jade. Legend has it that in the early days, Terra Kendama was a popular game in France which was brought to Japan by exchange students. After becoming a nation-wide sport in Japan, the popularity of the game spread overseas.

In Vancouver, there is a group of active players who love Terra Kendama. They create handmade Terra Kendamas and not only play the traditional way, but also create new and unique versions of the game. On stage at TAIWANfest, this group of youth players will share the development of this traditional game and also teach children. With music and rhythm, they are sure to leave you jaw dropped and fascinated by their impossible and wonderful toy!
